A Little About Saugus
Saugus, meaning “great” in a local Native American language, is home to the oldest operating barber shop in the United States and where the nineteenth-century industry of ice harvesting got started. It had the first integrated ironworks, which is now recognized as an official National Historic Landmark. The first commercially successful incineration plant was built in Saugus and is still working today. Curiously, though the town has a shoreline, it doesn’t have any beaches.
