A Little About Gloucester
Though its busy harbor constitutes a pillar of the local economy today, early Gloucester did not start out with a maritime focus, unlike many a settlement of the colonial period. Ironically, the native soil was not particularly suitable for much farming, but the city did eventually learn to harvest its rocky hills and so came to found a thriving granite industry. Gloucester today is notable for its long-standing artistic community, which has historically hosted many American greats, such as those of the Ashcan School.
